  5. Step 5. Return the weights to the starting position and continue alternating to the front and side.

Frequently asked questions

Which specific shoulder muscles does the alternating deltoid raise target?

This exercise primarily targets the anterior and lateral heads of the deltoid. By alternating arms, you maintain constant tension on the core to stabilize the torso against the shifting load.

How can I prevent using momentum during the lift?

Avoid swinging the weights or arching your back to initiate the movement. Perform each rep with a controlled tempo, pausing briefly at the top of the range of motion to ensure the shoulders are doing the work.

What is a common mistake to avoid when performing this exercise?

Many lifters shrug their shoulders toward their ears, which shifts the load to the upper traps. Keep your shoulder blades depressed and neutral throughout the entire lift.

Is there a beginner-friendly variation if dumbbells feel unstable?

Beginners can perform the movement seated on a bench to eliminate lower body momentum and provide back support. This isolation allows the trainee to focus entirely on the shoulder contraction.

What is the recommended set and rep range for hypertrophy?

Perform 3 to 4 sets of 10 to 15 repetitions per arm. Because this is an isolation movement, higher volume with moderate weight is generally more effective than lifting near-maximal loads.

Sample sets & reps for Alternating Deltoid Raise

  • Form first: 3 sets × 10-12 reps, 60s rest. RPE 6, focus on the target muscle.
  • Hypertrophy: 3 sets × 12-15 reps, 45-60s rest. RPE 7-8, controlled eccentric.
  • Burnout finisher: 2 sets × 15-20 reps, 45s rest. RPE 9, last set to failure.

Pick the scheme that matches your goal. Beginners should start at the lower end of every range; progress weight only when you hit the upper end of the rep range with one or two reps in reserve.
