How to perform Barbell Ab Rollout
- Step 1. For this exercise you will need to get into a pushup position, but instead of having your hands of the floor, you will be grabbing on to an Olympic barbell (loaded with 5-10 lbs on each side) instead. This will be your starting position.
- Step 2. While keeping a slight arch on your back, lift your hips and roll the barbell towards your feet as you exhale. Tip: As you perform the movement, your glutes should be coming up, you should be keeping the abs tight and should maintain your back posture at all times. Also your arms should be staying perpendicular to the floor throughout the movement. If you don't, you will work out your shoulders and back more than the abs.
- Step 3. After a second contraction at the top, start to roll the barbell back forward to the starting position slowly as you inhale.
- Step 4. Repeat for the recommended amount of repetitions.
Frequently asked questions
Which muscles are primarily targeted by the barbell ab rollout?
The barbell ab rollout primarily targets the rectus abdominis and the deep core stabilizers. It also engages the lats and triceps to maintain control of the barbell throughout the range of motion.
What is the most common form mistake to avoid during the rollout?
The most common error is arching the lower back, which shifts tension from the abs to the spine. Maintain a slight posterior pelvic tilt and keep your core braced to protect the lumbar region.
How can a beginner modify this exercise if it is too difficult?
Beginners should perform the movement from their knees and limit the range of motion by rolling toward a wall. This physical barrier prevents overextension while strength is being built.
How should I position my arms and shoulders during the movement?
Keep your arms straight but do not lock your elbows completely. Ensure your shoulders stay depressed and away from your ears to maintain tension in the lats and stability in the upper body.
What is the recommended set and rep range for core stability?
Perform 3 to 4 sets of 8 to 12 controlled repetitions. Focus on a slow eccentric phase and a brief pause at full extension to maximize time under tension.
