Cable Russian Twists

The Cable Russian Twists primarily targets your Abdominals. It requires cable and is best suited to beginner lifters.

Beginner level · Equipment: Cable · Compound · Pull

Primary muscles: Abdominals

How to perform Cable Russian Twists

  1. Step 1. Connect a standard handle attachment, and position the cable to a middle pulley position.
  2. Step 2. Lie on a stability ball perpendicular to the cable and grab the handle with one hand. You should be approximately arm's length away from the pulley, with the tension of the weight on the cable.
  3. Step 3. Grab the handle with both hands and fully extend your arms above your chest. You hands should be directly in-line with the pulley. If not, adjust the pulley up or down until they are.
  4. Step 4. Keep your hips elevated and abs engaged. Rotate your torso away from the pulley for a full-quarter rotation. Your body should be flat from head to knees.
  5. Step 5. Pause for a moment and in a slow and controlled manner reset to the starting position. You should still have side tension on the cable in the resting position.
  6. Step 6. Repeat the same movement to failure.
  7. Step 7. Then, reposition and repeat the same series of movements on the opposite side.

Frequently asked questions

Which specific muscle groups do cable Russian twists target?

The primary focus is the rectus abdominis and the internal and external obliques. The cable provides constant tension throughout the rotation, which challenges the core more than the bodyweight version.

How should I position my arms and torso during the movement?

Keep your arms straight or slightly bent while maintaining a fixed angle to ensure the rotation comes from your torso rather than your shoulders. Sit with a tall spine and lean back slightly to engage the core.

What is a common mistake to avoid when using the cable machine?

Avoid using momentum or pulling the weight with your arms instead of rotating your hips and torso. Ensure the movement is slow and controlled to maintain tension on the abdominal muscles.

How can beginners modify this exercise if the cable version is too difficult?

Beginners should start with the bodyweight version on the floor to master the rotational mechanics. Once stable, they can progress to using a light resistance band before moving to the cable machine.

What is the recommended set and rep range for core stability?

Perform 3 to 4 sets of 10 to 15 controlled repetitions per side. Focus on high-quality contractions and a full range of motion rather than lifting heavy weights that compromise form.

Sample sets & reps for Cable Russian Twists

  • Form first: 3 sets × 10-12 reps, 60s rest. RPE 6, focus on the target muscle.
  • Hypertrophy: 3 sets × 12-15 reps, 45-60s rest. RPE 7-8, controlled eccentric.
  • Burnout finisher: 2 sets × 15-20 reps, 45s rest. RPE 9, last set to failure.

Pick the scheme that matches your goal. Beginners should start at the lower end of every range; progress weight only when you hit the upper end of the rep range with one or two reps in reserve.
