How to perform Decline Dumbbell Triceps Extension
- Step 1. Secure your legs at the end of the decline bench and lie down with a dumbbell on each hand on top of your thighs. The palms of your hand will be facing each other.
- Step 2. Once you are laying down, move the dumbbells in front of you at shoulder width. The palms of the hands should be facing each other and the arms should be perpendicular to the floor and fully extended. This will be your starting position.
- Step 3. As you breathe in and you keep the upper arms stationary (and elbows in), bring the dumbbells down slowly by moving your forearms in a semicircular motion towards you until your thumbs are next to your ears. Breathe in as you perform this portion of the movement.
- Step 4. Lift the dumbbells back to the starting position by contracting the triceps and exhaling.
- Step 5. Repeat for the recommended amount of repetitions.
Frequently asked questions
What is the primary benefit of performing this exercise on a decline bench?
The decline angle increases the range of motion and maintains constant tension on the long head of the triceps throughout the movement.
How should I position my elbows during the movement?
Keep your elbows tucked in and pointed toward the ceiling. Avoid letting them flare outward to ensure the triceps remain the primary mover.
What is a common mistake to avoid during the eccentric phase?
Avoid lowering the weights too quickly or using momentum. Control the dumbbells until they are beside your ears to maximize muscle fiber recruitment.
How should I incorporate this exercise into my training program?
This isolation movement is best performed for 3-4 sets of 10-15 repetitions. Use it toward the end of a workout after heavy compound pressing movements.
What is a suitable alternative for beginners who find the decline angle difficult?
Beginners can perform the flat bench dumbbell triceps extension to build foundational strength. This version offers more stability while using the same mechanics.
