Primary muscles: Traps Secondary muscles: Forearms

How to perform Leverage Shrug

  1. Step 1. Load the pins to an appropriate weight. Position yourself directly between the handles.
  2. Step 2. Grasp the top handles with a comfortable grip, and then lower your hips as you take a breath. Look forward with your head and keep your chest up.
  3. Step 3. Drive through the floor with your heels, extending your hips and knees as you rise to a standing position. Keep your arms straight throughout the movement, finishing with your shoulders back. This will be your starting position.
  4. Step 4. Raise the weight by shrugging the shoulders towards your ears, moving straight up and down.
  5. Step 5. Pause at the top of the motion, and then return the weight to the starting position.

Frequently asked questions

Which specific muscles does the leverage shrug target?

The leverage shrug primarily targets the upper fibers of the trapezius. Because the machine stabilizes the path of motion, it allows for high mechanical tension on the upper back.

How should I position my shoulders during the movement?

Maintain a neutral spine and pull the handles straight up toward your ears without rolling your shoulders forward or backward. Focus on a vertical path to maximize contraction in the traps.

What is a common mistake to avoid when using the shrug machine?

Avoid using excessive momentum or bending the elbows to pull the weight up. Keep your arms straight throughout the set to ensure the trapezius performs the actual work.

Is the leverage shrug suitable for beginners compared to dumbbells?

Yes, the fixed path of a leverage machine is excellent for beginners as it requires less stabilization than dumbbells. It allows the lifter to focus entirely on the mind-muscle connection.

What is the recommended set and rep range for trap growth?

Perform 3 to 4 sets of 10 to 15 repetitions with a brief pause at the top of each movement. This higher rep range provides the metabolic stress necessary for hypertrophy in the upper back.

Sample sets & reps for Leverage Shrug

  • Form first: 3 sets × 10-12 reps, 60s rest. RPE 6, focus on the target muscle.
  • Hypertrophy: 3 sets × 12-15 reps, 45-60s rest. RPE 7-8, controlled eccentric.
  • Burnout finisher: 2 sets × 15-20 reps, 45s rest. RPE 9, last set to failure.

Pick the scheme that matches your goal. Beginners should start at the lower end of every range; progress weight only when you hit the upper end of the rep range with one or two reps in reserve.
