Lower Back-SMR
The Lower Back-SMR primarily targets your Lower Back. It requires stretch and is best suited to beginner lifters.
Beginner level · Equipment: Stretch · Static
Primary muscles: Lower Back
How to perform Lower Back-SMR
- Step 1. In a seated position, place a foam roll under your lower back. Cross your arms in front of you and protract your shoulders. This will be your starting position.
- Step 2. Raise your hips off of the floor and lean back, keeping your weight on your lower back. Now shift your weight slightly to one side, keeping your weight off of the spine and on the muscles to the side of it. Roll over your lower back, holding points of tension for 10-30 seconds. Repeat on the other side.
Frequently asked questions
What is the primary target of lower back self-myofascial release?
This technique targets the erector spinae and quadratus lumborum muscles to reduce tension. It is used to improve soft tissue quality and alleviate localized stiffness in the lumbar region.
How should I position the foam roller or ball for this exercise?
Place the tool under the soft tissue on one side of the spine rather than directly on the vertebrae. Use your legs to control the pressure and move slowly over tight spots.
What is a common mistake to avoid during lower back SMR?
Avoid rolling directly over the spinal processes or applying excessive pressure that causes the core to collapse. Maintain a neutral spine and use your breath to help the muscles relax.
How can a beginner modify this movement if it feels too intense?
Beginners should use a softer foam roller or perform the movement against a wall to reduce the amount of body weight applied. This allows for better control over the pressure and intensity.
How often should lower back SMR be included in a routine?
Perform this for 30 to 60 seconds per side as part of a warm-up or recovery session. Focus on slow, controlled movements rather than rapid rolling to effectively release tissue tension.
