Seated Barbell Twist

Performed seated, which isolates the target muscle and removes leg drive, this variation primarily targets your Abdominals. It requires barbell and is best suited to beginner lifters.

Beginner level · Equipment: Barbell · Isolation · Pull

Primary muscles: Abdominals

How to perform Seated Barbell Twist

  1. Step 1. Start out by sitting at the end of a flat bench with a barbell placed on top of your thighs. Your feet should be shoulder width apart from each other.
  2. Step 2. Grip the bar with your palms facing down and make sure your hands are wider than shoulder width apart from each other. Begin to lift the barbell up over your head until your arms are fully extended.
  3. Step 3. Now lower the barbell behind your head until it is resting along the base of your neck. This is the starting position.
  4. Step 4. While keeping your feet and head stationary, move your waist from side to side so that your oblique muscles feel the contraction. Only move from side to side as far as your waist will allow you to go. Stretching or moving too far can cause an injury to occur. Tip: Use a slow and controlled motion.
  5. Step 5. Remember to breathe out while twisting your body to the side and in when moving back to the starting position.
  6. Step 6. Repeat for the recommended amount of repetitions.

Frequently asked questions

What primary muscle groups does the seated barbell twist target?

The movement primarily targets the internal and external obliques through spinal rotation. The rectus abdominis also acts as a stabilizer to maintain an upright posture throughout the set.

How can I ensure proper form during the rotation?

Keep the spine neutral and rotate the torso slowly while keeping the hips locked forward. Avoid using momentum and focus on a controlled range of motion to prevent excessive spinal shearing.

What is a common mistake to avoid when performing this exercise?

Many lifters rotate too quickly or use a range of motion that causes the hips to shift on the bench. This reduces oblique engagement and places unnecessary stress on the lumbar discs.

Is there a beginner-friendly alternative to using a barbell?

Beginners should start with a wooden dowel or a light PVC pipe to master the rotational mechanics. This allows for focus on core engagement without the compressive load of a standard barbell.

What is the recommended set and rep range for this movement?

Perform 2 to 3 sets of 15 to 20 controlled repetitions per side. High-volume, low-intensity sets are preferred to prioritize core endurance and rotational control over raw strength.

Sample sets & reps for Seated Barbell Twist

  • Form first: 3 sets × 10-12 reps, 60s rest. RPE 6, focus on the target muscle.
  • Hypertrophy: 3 sets × 12-15 reps, 45-60s rest. RPE 7-8, controlled eccentric.
  • Burnout finisher: 2 sets × 15-20 reps, 45s rest. RPE 9, last set to failure.

Pick the scheme that matches your goal. Beginners should start at the lower end of every range; progress weight only when you hit the upper end of the rep range with one or two reps in reserve.
