Body Fat Percentage Chart for Men and Women (With Visual Descriptions)

Complete body fat percentage chart for men and women with visual descriptions of each range — athletic, fitness, average — plus realistic goal-setting guidance.

"What does 15% body fat actually look like?" is one of the most popular fitness questions on Google. This is because the number itself is hard to understand. You can find out your body fat percentage to the nearest tenth of a percent, but you still won't know if it's low, average, or high for someone your age and sex. This guide takes care of that.

Below is the full body fat percentage chart for men and women. It shows what each range looks like, what you can realistically achieve, and what happens to your body when you go too low. All of the ranges are based on the American Council on Exercise (ACE) and the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) guidelines, which were checked against DEXA scan data.

Chart of body fat percentage for men

GroupRangePicture description
Essential fat2–5%Level of bodybuilding on the day of the competition. You can see every muscle striation. Not sustainable; it affects hormones and recovery.
Athletic6–13%Sharp jaw, clear abs, visible obliques, and vascularity in arms and shoulders. The area for elite athletes.
Fitness14–17%Abs that can be seen in good light, and some muscle definition in the arms and chest. Where most "fit-looking" guys sit.
Average18–24%No visible abs, a soft midsection, and some fat around the waist. A healthy range for people who don't work out.
Above average25%+Noticeable belly, rounder face, and limbs. Higher risk of heart disease over 28%.

Chart of body fat percentage for women

Women's essential body fat is higher than men's because it includes breast tissue and fat that is needed for menstruation, hormonal function, and possible pregnancy. A woman with 14% body fat is not the same as a man with 14% body fat.

TypeRangeVisual description
Essential fat10–13%Bikini competitor who is stage-lean. Often messes up periods. Not long-term sustainable.
Sports14–20%Defined abs, visible muscle tone, and not much fat around the hips. Level of a sprinter or fitness model.
Fitness21–24%Some definition in the abs, toned arms and legs, and a slight curve in the hips. Looks good whether you're wearing clothes or not.
Average25–31%Soft curves, no visible abs, and a healthy look. Fine for medical reasons, but muscle definition is harder to see.
Above average32%+Soft midsection, fuller hips, and thighs. Increased risk of metabolic disease over 35%.

A lot of people in the fitness industry say that "shredded" is the goal, but both research and real life say that's not true. This is what most people can really do and keep doing:

  • General fitness goal: for men, 12–15%, and for women, 20–24%. Looks athletic, easy to keep up, and keeps your social life going.
  • "Beach body" goal: men should aim for 10–12% and women should aim for 18–21%. Needs strict nutrition for at least six months. Maintenance takes work all the time.
  • Competitive lean: 6–8% for men and 14–16% for women. Possible, but it's better for your health to cut and rebuild every so often than to stay there all year.

Going too low: the hidden cost

For men, testosterone levels drop by 30–50% and periods stop for women. The risk of injury doubles, sleep quality drops, and immune function drops when body fat levels fall below 5% for men and 10% for women. This is why bodybuilders compete for one day at a time and then eat their way back up.

How to find out where you are

Smart scales make you look thinner than you are, callipers take some practice, and DEXA scans require an appointment. An AI estimate based on photos works surprisingly well for weekly trend tracking, but you have to make sure the photos are always taken under the same conditions. Use our free Fat%AI scanner
