Beginner level · Equipment: Bodyweight · Compound · Pull

Primary muscles: Abdominals

How to perform Decline Oblique Crunch

  1. Step 1. Secure your legs at the end of the decline bench and slowly lay down on the bench.
  2. Step 2. Raise your upper body off the bench until your torso is about 35-45 degrees if measured from the floor.
  3. Step 3. Put one hand beside your head and the other on your thigh. This will be your starting position.
  4. Step 4. Raise your upper body slowly from the starting position while turning your torso to the left. Continue crunching up as you exhale until your right elbow touches your left knee. Hold this contracted position for a second. Tip: Focus on keeping your abs tight and keeping the movement slow and controlled.
  5. Step 5. Lower your body back down slowly to the starting position as you inhale.
  6. Step 6. After completing one set on the right for the recommended amount of repetitions, switch to your left side. Tip: Focus on really twisting your torso and feeling the contraction when you are in the up position.

Frequently asked questions

What is the primary muscle focus of the decline oblique crunch?

This exercise primarily targets the internal and external obliques. The decline angle increases the gravitational load on the abdominal wall compared to flat ground variations.

How should I position my body to maximize oblique engagement?

Rotate your torso so the opposite elbow moves toward the alternate knee while maintaining a hollow body position. Focus on shortening the distance between your ribcage and hip bone.

What are common mistakes to avoid during this movement?

Avoid pulling on your neck with your hands, which can cause cervical strain. Ensure the movement comes from trunk rotation rather than just moving your elbows back and forth.

How can beginners make the decline oblique crunch easier?

Beginners should reduce the bench angle to a shallower slope or perform the movement on a flat floor. Using a shorter range of motion can also help build initial core stability.

What is the recommended set and rep range for this exercise?

Perform 3 to 4 sets of 12 to 15 controlled repetitions per side. Focus on a slow eccentric phase and a brief isometric hold at the peak of the contraction.

Sample sets & reps for Decline Oblique Crunch

  • Beginner endurance: 3 sets × 8-12 reps, 60-90s rest. RPE 6-7, leave 3 reps in reserve.
  • Hypertrophy: 4 sets × 12-20 reps, 60s rest. RPE 8, last set to failure.
  • Conditioning: 3-5 sets × AMRAP for 30-45s, 30-60s rest. Steady pace, controlled tempo.

Pick the scheme that matches your goal. Beginners should start at the lower end of every range; progress weight only when you hit the upper end of the rep range with one or two reps in reserve.
