Intermediate level · Equipment: Stretch · Isolation · Static
Primary muscles: Abductors
How to perform Iliotibial Tract-SMR
- Step 1. Lay on your side, with the bottom leg placed onto a foam roller between the hip and the knee. The other leg can be crossed in front of you.
- Step 2. Place as much of your weight as is tolerable onto your bottom leg; there is no need to keep your bottom leg in contact with the ground. Be sure to relax the muscles of the leg you are stretching.
- Step 3. Roll your leg over the foam from you hip to your knee, pausing for 10-30 seconds at points of tension. Repeat with the opposite leg.
Frequently asked questions
How should I position my body for IT tract self-myofascial release?
Lie on your side with the foam roller under your hip and the top leg crossed in front for support. Use your arms and the lead leg to control the pressure as you roll toward the knee.
What muscles are primarily targeted during this exercise?
This technique focuses on the lateral thigh, specifically targeting the tensor fasciae latae and the gluteus maximus where they insert into the IT band. It aims to reduce tension in the connective tissue.
What is a common mistake to avoid when rolling the IT band?
Avoid rolling directly over the knee joint or the bony prominence of the hip. Keep the movement slow and controlled rather than bouncing or rolling too quickly over sensitive areas.
How can beginners make IT tract rolling less intense?
Beginners should use a softer foam roller and shift more body weight onto their supporting leg and arms. This reduces the direct pressure applied to the lateral thigh tissue.
How often should I perform this SMR technique?
Perform this for 30 to 60 seconds per side as part of a warm-up or recovery routine. It can be done daily to help manage lateral leg tightness and improve hip mobility.
