How to perform Monster Walk

  1. Step 1. Place a band around both ankles and another around both knees. There should be enough tension that they are tight when your feet are shoulder width apart.
  2. Step 2. To begin, take short steps forward alternating your left and right foot.
  3. Step 3. After several steps, do just the opposite and walk backward to where you started.

Frequently asked questions

Which specific muscles does the monster walk target?

The monster walk primarily targets the gluteus medius and gluteus minimus. These muscles are essential for hip stability and maintaining proper knee alignment during compound movements.

Where should the resistance band be placed for maximum effectiveness?

Placing the band around the ankles or just above the knees increases tension on the hip abductors. Lower placement generally increases the lever arm, making the exercise more challenging for the glutes.

What is a common form mistake to avoid during this movement?

Avoid letting the knees cave inward or allowing the feet to drag. Maintain a slight athletic crouch and keep constant tension on the band by keeping the feet at least shoulder-width apart.

How can a beginner modify the monster walk if it feels too difficult?

Beginners can start with a lighter resistance band or place the band higher up on the thighs to reduce leverage. Focus on maintaining a stable torso and controlled steps before increasing resistance.

How should the monster walk be programmed into a workout routine?

Perform 2 to 3 sets of 15 to 20 steps per direction as a glute activation warm-up. It can also be used as a burnout finisher at the end of a lower-body session to maximize hip fatigue.

Sample sets & reps for Monster Walk

  • Form first: 3 sets × 10-12 reps, 60s rest. RPE 6, focus on the target muscle.
  • Hypertrophy: 3 sets × 12-15 reps, 45-60s rest. RPE 7-8, controlled eccentric.
  • Burnout finisher: 2 sets × 15-20 reps, 45s rest. RPE 9, last set to failure.

Pick the scheme that matches your goal. Beginners should start at the lower end of every range; progress weight only when you hit the upper end of the rep range with one or two reps in reserve.
