How to perform One-Arm Kettlebell Push Press
- Step 1. Hold a kettlebell by the handle. Clean the kettlebell to your shoulder by extending through the legs and hips as you pull the kettlebell towards your shoulder. Rotate your wrist as you do so, so that the palm faces forward. This will be your starting position.
- Step 2. Dip your body by bending the knees, keeping your torso upright.
- Step 3. Immediately reverse direction, driving through the heels, in essence jumping to create momentum. As you do so, press the kettlebell overhead to lockout by extending the arms, using your body's momentum to move the weight. Lower the weight to perform the next repetition.
Frequently asked questions
How do I use my legs to assist the movement?
Perform a quick quarter-squat and immediately drive upward through your heels to create momentum. This leg drive should transfer force through your core to help launch the kettlebell overhead.
What are the primary muscles targeted by this exercise?
The movement primarily targets the anterior and medial deltoids. The triceps and core act as stabilizers, while the lower body generates the initial power for the lift.
What is a common mistake to avoid during the overhead lockout?
Avoid arching your lower back or leaning away from the weight at the top of the rep. Keep your glutes squeezed and ribcage down to maintain a neutral spine and stable shoulder position.
How can a beginner progress toward the one-arm push press?
Start with the strict overhead press to build foundational shoulder strength. Once you can control the weight during the descent, introduce the leg drive to handle heavier loads or higher volume.
What is the recommended set and rep range for power development?
For explosive power, perform 3 to 5 sets of 3 to 6 repetitions per arm. Focus on maximum acceleration during the drive phase while maintaining a controlled tempo on the way down.
