What is a good body fat percentage for each age group? (Charts for Men and Women)

Reference · 2026-02-16 · 6 min read

Age-adjusted body fat percentage charts for men and women from 20 to 60+, with the biology of why targets rise with age and how to pick a realistic goal.

A 25-year-old and a 55-year-old with the same amount of body fat (18%) read very differently. One is lean and athletic, and the other is winning the battle against genetics. Most body-fat charts don't take into account how age changes the math of body composition. This means that a young guy who is obsessed with being "shredded" might be chasing a number that is unhealthy for someone twice his age.

This guide tells you what a healthy body fat percentage should be for your age and sex, why the "lower is better" mindset doesn't work after 40, and how to tell the difference between a healthy reading and an anxious one.

Why the targets rise with age, and why that's actually healthy

As we get older, "healthy" body fat goes up for three reasons:

  • Hormones. Men's testosterone and women's oestrogen both go down. Both hormones help keep fat stores low. When they drop, fat storage naturally goes up. Fighting that trend hard puts a strain on hormones, not health.
  • Sarcopenia. If you don't do resistance training, you lose about 1% of your muscle each year after age 30. Less muscle means a slower metabolism, which means more fat even if you eat the same amount of food. Lifting is the only thing that works.
  • Health of the bones. After age 50, a little bit of body fat around the bones protects them from falls. Women who have gone through menopause and have 18% body fat are much more likely to break bones than women who have 28% body fat.

The "shredded at 55" look you see on Instagram is almost always fake, unhealthy, or too much work. A few percentage points of body fat are normal as you get older, not a problem.

Choosing a realistic goal

A good rule of thumb

For your age group, try to reach the top end of "Fitness." That's thin enough to see muscle definition, high enough not to hurt hormones or bone density, and long-lasting.

For a man who is 35 years old, aim for 17–19%. 26–28% for a woman who is 45 years old. Both of those look athletic in pictures, are easy to keep up with moderate effort, and have been studied for their long-term effects.

Red flags: when having too little body fat is a problem

  • Heart rate at rest drops below 50 for no reason
  • Hands and feet that stay cold even when it's warm
  • Sleep quality going down (waking up at 3 AM and not being able to get back to sleep)
  • Sex drive went down a lot for more than two weeks
  • Women who missed their periods
  • Getting bruises more easily

If you eat more of these, you'll gain 2 to 3 percentage points. This isn't weakness; it's just biology.
