How to perform Depth Jump Leap
- Step 1. For this drill you will need two boxes or benches, one 12 to 16 inches high and the other 22 to 26 inches high.
- Step 2. Stand on one of the two boxes with arms at the sides; feet should be together and slightly off the edge as in the depth jump. Place the other box approximately two or three feet in front of and facing the performer.
- Step 3. Begin by dropping off the initial box, landing and simultaneously taking off with both feet.
- Step 4. Rebound by driving upward and outward as intensely as possible, using the arms and full extension of the body to jump onto the higher box. Again, allow the legs to absorb the impact.
Frequently asked questions
What is the primary focus of the depth jump leap?
This exercise targets the quadriceps and emphasizes the stretch-shortening cycle. It develops explosive power by minimizing ground contact time between the drop and the leap.
How should I land during the initial drop phase?
Land softly on the balls of your feet with knees tracking over your toes. Avoid letting your heels slam or your knees collapse inward to maintain optimal force transfer.
What is a common mistake when performing this movement?
Spending too much time on the ground between the drop and the jump reduces the plyometric effect. The goal is to transition into the leap as quickly as possible.
How can a beginner safely progress to this exercise?
Start with a low box height of 12 inches to master the landing mechanics. Focus on vertical jumps from a standstill before adding the drop component to ensure joint stability.
What is the recommended set and rep range for power development?
Perform 3 to 5 sets of 3 to 5 repetitions with full recovery between sets. High volume is unnecessary because the movement requires maximum intensity and nervous system freshness.
Sample sets & reps for Depth Jump Leap
- Warm-up: 2 sets × 8-10 reps or 20-30s hold, 30s rest. Light, controlled tempo.
- Mobility focus: 3 sets × 30-60s hold, 30s rest. Moderate stretch, no pain.
- Pre-workout activation: 1-2 sets × 6-8 reps, 15-30s rest. Dynamic, full range of motion.
Pick the scheme that matches your goal. Beginners should start at the lower end of every range; progress weight only when you hit the upper end of the rep range with one or two reps in reserve.
