How to perform Narrow Stance Leg Press

  1. Step 1. Using a leg press machine, sit down on the machine and place your legs on the platform directly in front of you at a less-than-shoulder-width narrow stance with the toes slightly pointed out. Your feet should be around 3 inches or less apart. Tip: Keep your head up at all times and also maintain the back on the pad at all times.
  2. Step 2. Lower the safety bars holding the weighted platform in place and press the platform all the way up until your legs are fully extended in front of you. Tip: Make sure that you do not lock your knees. Your torso and the legs should make a perfect 90-degree angle. This will be your starting position.
  3. Step 3. As you inhale, slowly lower the platform until your upper and lower legs make a 90-degree angle.
  4. Step 4. Pushing mainly with the heels of your feet and using the quadriceps go back to the starting position as you exhale.
  5. Step 5. Repeat for the recommended amount of repetitions and ensure to lock the safety pins properly once you are done. You do not want that platform falling on you fully loaded.

Frequently asked questions

What are the primary muscles targeted by the narrow stance leg press?

This variation shifts the emphasis toward the quadriceps, specifically the vastus lateralis on the outer thigh. The narrow foot placement reduces hip adductor involvement compared to a wider stance.

How does foot placement on the platform affect the exercise?

Placing feet lower on the platform increases knee flexion and quad activation but puts more stress on the patellar tendon. A mid-to-low position is standard for targeting the quads effectively.

What is a common mistake to avoid during the movement?

Avoid allowing the knees to cave inward or lifting the lower back off the seat pad. Maintain constant tension by stopping just short of locking out the knees at the top of the rep.

How should a beginner approach this exercise?

Beginners should start with a moderate weight to master the range of motion and ensure the heels remain flat on the platform. If the machine is unavailable, a narrow stance goblet squat is a viable alternative.

What is the recommended set and rep range for hypertrophy?

Perform 3 to 4 sets of 10 to 15 repetitions to maximize metabolic stress in the quadriceps. This exercise is best utilized as a secondary movement after heavy compound lifts like squats.

Sample sets & reps for Narrow Stance Leg Press

  • Strength accessory: 4 sets × 6-8 reps, 90s rest. 75-80% 1RM, RPE 7-8.
  • Hypertrophy: 3-4 sets × 8-12 reps, 60-90s rest. RPE 8, controlled tempo.
  • Metabolic stress: 3 sets × 15-20 reps, 30-45s rest. RPE 9, last set to failure with rest-pause.

Pick the scheme that matches your goal. Beginners should start at the lower end of every range; progress weight only when you hit the upper end of the rep range with one or two reps in reserve.
