Frequently asked questions
What is the primary target of Anterior Tibialis SMR?
This technique targets the tibialis anterior muscle located on the front of the lower leg. Releasing this area helps manage tension that often contributes to shin splints and restricted ankle mobility.
How should I position my body for this release?
Place a foam roller or lacrosse ball under the muscle belly just outside the shin bone. Use your hands and opposite leg to control the amount of pressure applied as you roll slowly.
What is a common mistake to avoid during this exercise?
Avoid rolling directly onto the tibia bone, which can cause unnecessary pain and bruising. Keep the pressure focused on the soft tissue located on the lateral side of the shin.
How can beginners modify the intensity of the pressure?
Beginners should start with a softer foam roller to distribute pressure over a larger area. If the sensation is too intense, keep more weight on the supporting leg and arms to offload the muscle.
How often should I perform this SMR technique?
Perform this for 30 to 60 seconds per side as part of a warm-up or recovery routine. Daily application is acceptable if the tissue is particularly tight or if you are increasing running volume.
