Frequently asked questions

Which specific calf muscles does the barbell seated calf raise target?

The seated position puts the knees in flexion, which relaxes the gastrocnemius and shifts the primary load onto the soleus muscle.

How should the barbell be positioned for comfort and stability?

Place the barbell across the lower thighs just above the knees, using a squat pad or folded towel to prevent the bar from digging into the legs.

What is a common mistake to avoid during the eccentric phase?

Avoid bouncing the weight at the bottom of the movement. Use a controlled tempo and pause briefly at the peak of the stretch to ensure the muscle is doing the work.

How should beginners progress if they find the barbell difficult to balance?

Start with light dumbbells placed on each knee or use a dedicated seated calf raise machine to master the range of motion before moving to a free-weight barbell.

What is the recommended set and rep range for this exercise?

Perform 3 to 4 sets of 12 to 20 reps. The soleus consists of mostly slow-twitch fibers, making it highly responsive to higher repetition counts and time under tension.

Sample sets & reps for Barbell Seated Calf Raise

  • Form first: 3 sets × 10-12 reps, 60s rest. RPE 6, focus on the target muscle.

  • Burnout finisher: 2 sets × 15-20 reps, 45s rest. RPE 9, last set to failure.
