Calves Exercises
28 calves exercises with photo demos and step-by-step instructions.
Calves respond best to high-frequency, high-rep training in both the standing position (gastrocnemius — knees straight) and seated position (soleus — knees bent). Most lifters benefit from 4-6 short sessions per week, 8-15 sets total, with weights heavy enough to fail in the 8-15 rep range.
How often should you train calves?
Calves tolerate very high frequency. Train them 3-5 times per week, 6-15 sets per session. Combine standing calf raises (gastrocnemius, knees straight) with seated calf raises (soleus, knees bent) for full development.
Common calves training mistakes
- Bouncing the rep — calves grow most from full range of motion. Lower as far as you can, pause for 1-2 seconds, drive up.
- Only training in one foot position (straight) — vary toes-in, neutral, and toes-out across sessions to hit different fibre orientations.
- Skipping the soleus — only doing standing raises ignores the soleus, which is best targeted by seated calf raises with knees bent ~90°.
Frequently asked questions about calves training
How often should I train calves?
3-5 sessions per week is well-supported. The calves have a high proportion of slow-twitch fibres and recover quickly between sessions.
Standing vs seated calf raises?
Standing raises target the gastrocnemius (the large two-headed muscle visible from the back); seated raises target the soleus (the deep, single-headed muscle below). A complete program needs both.
Why won't my calves grow?
Three usual culprits: (1) partial range of motion, (2) insufficient frequency (1-2× per week isn't enough), (3) reps too low — calves often respond best to 15-25 rep sets with controlled tempo.
Best rep range for calves?
Mix it up. 6-10 reps with heavy weight for gastrocnemius mass, and 15-25 reps for soleus and metabolic stress. Calves respond to both rep ranges, often within the same session.
Do calves grow with daily training?
Light calf training daily (sub-failure, bodyweight calf raises) is fine and can drive growth. Heavy, working sets still need 24-48 hours of recovery between true sessions.
