Primary muscles: Calves

How to perform Calf Press On The Leg Press Machine

  1. Step 1. Using a leg press machine, sit down on the machine and place your legs on the platform directly in front of you at a medium (shoulder width) foot stance.
  2. Step 2. Lower the safety bars holding the weighted platform in place and press the platform all the way up until your legs are fully extended in front of you without locking your knees. (Note: In some leg press units you can leave the safety bars on for increased safety. If your leg press unit allows for this, then this is the preferred method of performing the exercise.) Your torso and the legs should make perfect 90-degree angle. Now carefully place your toes and balls of your feet on the lower portion of the platform with the heels extending off. Toes should be facing forward, outwards or inwards as described at the beginning of the chapter. This will be your starting position.
  3. Step 3. Press on the platform by raising your heels as you breathe out by extending your ankles as high as possible and flexing your calf. Ensure that the knee is kept stationary at all times. There should be no bending at any time. Hold the contracted position by a second before you start to go back down.
  4. Step 4. Go back slowly to the starting position as you breathe in by lowering your heels as you bend the ankles until calves are stretched.
  5. Step 5. Repeat for the recommended amount of repetitions.

Frequently asked questions

Which muscles does the calf press on the leg press machine target?

This exercise primarily targets the gastrocnemius and soleus muscles of the lower leg. Because the knees are kept straight, the gastrocnemius receives the highest degree of mechanical tension.

How should I position my feet on the platform for maximum safety?

Place the balls of your feet on the bottom edge of the sled with heels hanging off. Ensure your feet are hip-width apart and your toes are pointed forward to maintain even force distribution.

What is a common mistake to avoid during the calf press?

Avoid bouncing at the bottom of the movement or using momentum to lift the weight. Bouncing shifts the load from the muscle to the Achilles tendon, increasing injury risk and reducing hypertrophy.

Is this exercise suitable for beginners and how should they start?

This machine-based movement is ideal for beginners due to the fixed path of motion. Start with a light weight that allows for a full range of motion and a two-second pause at the top of each rep.

What is the recommended set and rep range for calf growth?

Perform 3 to 4 sets of 10 to 15 repetitions twice per week. Calves respond well to high-intensity sets that include a deep stretch at the bottom and a forceful contraction at the top.

Sample sets & reps for Calf Press On The Leg Press Machine

  • Form first: 3 sets × 10-12 reps, 60s rest. RPE 6, focus on the target muscle.
  • Hypertrophy: 3 sets × 12-15 reps, 45-60s rest. RPE 7-8, controlled eccentric.
  • Burnout finisher: 2 sets × 15-20 reps, 45s rest. RPE 9, last set to failure.

Pick the scheme that matches your goal. Beginners should start at the lower end of every range; progress weight only when you hit the upper end of the rep range with one or two reps in reserve.
