Peroneals-SMR

The Peroneals-SMR primarily targets your Calves. It requires stretch and is best suited to intermediate lifters.

Intermediate level · Equipment: Stretch · Static

Primary muscles: Calves

How to perform Peroneals-SMR

  1. Step 1. Lay on your side, supporting your weight on your forearm and on a foam roller placed on the outside of your lower leg. Your upper leg can either be on top of your lower leg, or you can cross it in front of you. This will be your starting position.
  2. Step 2. Raise your hips off of the ground and begin to roll from below the knee to above the ankle on the side of your leg, pausing at points of tension for 10-30 seconds. Repeat on the other leg.

Frequently asked questions

Which specific muscles does peroneal self-myofascial release target?

This technique targets the peroneus longus and brevis muscles located on the lateral side of the lower leg. Releasing these tissues helps manage lateral ankle stability and foot eversion mechanics.

How should I position my body for the best results?

Lie on your side and place a foam roller or lacrosse ball just below the knee on the outer calf. Use your arms and opposite leg to control the amount of pressure applied to the sensitive lateral tissues.

What is a common mistake to avoid during this release?

Avoid rolling directly over the bony prominence of the fibular head near the knee or the lateral malleolus at the ankle. Focus pressure solely on the fleshy muscle belly between these two joints.

Is there a beginner-friendly alternative to using a hard ball?

Beginners should start with a soft foam roller or use their hands to perform manual trigger point therapy. This allows for better control over intensity before progressing to denser tools like a lacrosse ball.

How long should I perform SMR on the peroneals during a session?

Spend 30 to 60 seconds per side, pausing on particularly tender spots for 10 to 20 seconds. This can be done daily as part of a warm-up or recovery routine to improve ankle mobility.

Sample sets & reps for Peroneals-SMR

  • Warm-up: 2 sets × 8-10 reps or 20-30s hold, 30s rest. Light, controlled tempo.
  • Mobility focus: 3 sets × 30-60s hold, 30s rest. Moderate stretch, no pain.
  • Pre-workout activation: 1-2 sets × 6-8 reps, 15-30s rest. Dynamic, full range of motion.

Pick the scheme that matches your goal. Beginners should start at the lower end of every range; progress weight only when you hit the upper end of the rep range with one or two reps in reserve.
